The ACHS Foster Family Program
Foster families open their hearts and homes to animals in need of
temporary care outside of the stressful shelter environment. These dedicated, compassionate people play a critical role in the lives of the cats and dogs they help. The care, time, energy and love offered by foster families provides an animal with the solid foundation for successful, life-long adoptions. In a nutshell, fosters save lives! |
Who Needs Foster Care?
Many of our cats and dogs benefit from foster care for a variety of reasons:
> Animals in need of socialization or behavior modification.
> Animals too young to go up for adoption.
> Pregnant or new moms in need of a safe place to raise and wean their litter.
> Animals in need of relief from the stress of shelter life.
> Animals in need of a quiet and safe home to recover from an illness, injury or surgery.
What Do Foster Families Provide?
Foster parents are asked to provide supplies (treats, toys, litter, bedding), transportation, and love
for their foster animals. Any needed medication, food or health care will be provided by ACHS.
The length of stay in foster care can vary from a few weeks to several months, depending on the
animal's specific needs. Homes that are able to take fosters on a consistent basis help out the most,
but even homes that can take only a couple fosters a year can be a big help to the shelter's animals.
Foster Care Requirements
In order to be considered for the foster program you must meet the following requirements:
> Complete and submit a Foster Care Application.
> Be 21 years of age and have a form of identification with your name and birthdate on it for verification.
> Current pets must be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations.
> Landlord and parent approval must be obtained. ACHS will contact either if this applies to you.
