***UPDATE*** Wonderful News! Brown Sugar made it through surgery! Three of the remaining four babies survived as well. She now has four kittens who also made it through this traumatic ordeal! The vet informed us that Brown Sugar has a very narrow body wall and the babies were exceptionally large. She stayed at the vet overnight for observation. Foster dad Jim will return to Madison today to pick her up. He didn't get home until 3:30 this morning. What a guy! Just a bit of history on Brown Sugar. She was living under a cabin near here in mid June. It was obvious Brown Sugar was pregnant, so the kind lady contacted us. Jim stepped up and offered to foster her. And you know the rest of her story to date. Brown Sugar will need 2 weeks of complete rest. All of us here at ACHS are so very GRATEFUL for the outpouring of genuine concern and love offered by our wonderful community. This has been quite the emotional rollercoaster ride. We can't thank you enough! As you are already aware, this has also been financially overwhelming for our small shelter. Please help with Brown Sugar's vet bills if you possibly can. Our hearts are full from all the generosity you have shown in the past when the shelter encounters these situations. Early this morning pregnant Brown Sugar went into labor at her foster dad Jim's home. Unfortunately, she wasn't progressing so she was brought into the shelter. Brown Sugar's first baby was stuck in the birth canal. Staff were able to deliver the dead baby, and a live baby quickly followed. A third baby was breach and suffocated due to being in the birth canal for too long. Another dead baby followed. Of course, poor Brown Sugar was not doing well at all by now. Our vet in Madison instructed staff to give her Gabapentin and get her to an emergency vet immediately. Foster dad rushed Brown Sugar down to Madison. An ultrasound showed she still had four big babies to deliver. It was determined an emergency C-section was the only way to at least save mama. Emergency vets are quite expensive. The cost of this surgery was $5700. I think you would agree this is incredibly expensive. Talk about a tough decision to make for a small shelter just barely getting by. Foster dad Jim quickly offered to pay half the bill out of this own pocket. What a generous man - our foster parents truly are amazing people! The photos show Brown Sugar's only surviving kitten nursing while waiting to be seen by the vet. We are reaching out to you and asking for help with this medical emergency.
